Biography

Between abstract and figurative, joy and bitterness, lyricism and austerity. Always Miollis sparkles, his art sparkles everywhere.

Jean-Christophe Buisson, Le Figaro

Born in 1972, Bertrand de Miollis lives and works in Paris.

He first makes himself known to the general public through his travel diaries.

After attending the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, in 2002 he took part in numerous journeys on motorcycles and on the seas: Round Africa by boat, Trans-Chilean by motorcycle, Paris-Kaboul by motorcycle, Round Lake Baikal by side-car by way of ice in particular. In Afghanistan and Iraq, he accompanied French and British troops, taking an artistic and human look at the difficult reality of the war. His numerous coloured notebooks were then selected and taken up by the press, publishing and television. His paintings arouse the interest of the galleries, several exhibitions reveal his works.

Curious about the great outdoors, Bertrand de Miollis also likes what he defines as “the immobile journey” which projects him towards the discovery of other artistic universes or disciplines. Thus he painted on polo (2008), on lyrical art with the conductor John Eliott Gardiner (2010) or on ballet (twelve months of residence with the dancers of the Paris Opera, 2014).

Each of his “immersions” gives rise to personal exposure.

Committed to traditional techniques (water and oil painting, engraving), he also explores the possibilities offered by the digital medium in 2015. As a pioneer, he uses this technological palette as an unprecedented way to cross several art forms. Nourished by the motif, his painting seeks to transcend the real by explosive colors; transporting the spectator in a relationship to the world between abstraction and figuration.

His work as a colorist translates into a tension between softness and acidity: roses, ultramarine blues, turquoise with tonic vibrations.
