It all begins with an immersion in reality. I explore the landscape to grasp its singularity — colors, textures, contours, light. I take notes, I paint on site, I photograph. Then I watch for the stories this landscape is willing to give up. A gable catching the light becomes a presence asserting itself, a kind of authority. Two houses standing too close become a duel; houses drawn tightly together become friends talking, or plotting. In this way I humanize the elements of the landscape — a dramaturgy already taking shape, almost in spite of me.
I absorb all of this experience like a sponge, then let it settle: the time of sedimentation, needed to free myself from the landscape without losing its essence.
Then comes the time of translation, in the studio. I rearrange what remains of it, and this language stretches toward a breath larger than myself — toward the sublime. It takes shape as suspensions, latencies, contained energies.
My language is a language with only questions and no answer.
